AI search quotes your blog and skips your service page because your blog headings name the thing being searched for and your service page headings do not. An assistant splits a page at its headings, keeps the text under each one as a separate passage, and labels that passage with the heading. A heading that reads SEO and AIO gives it almost nothing to match a question against. A heading that reads a marketing agency in Hyderabad that answers for results gives it a service, a place and a claim in nine words. The money pages are usually the ones written for mood.
We know this because we failed our own test, and the pages we sell from failed worst.
What did we find when we checked our own site?
On 28 August 2026 we read the top heading on every page of vridhiidigital.com. Across the 84 blog posts, 66 headings named a place, a city or a country. Across the 28 service, industry and company pages, 2 did. Those two are the Sainikpuri page and the Hyderabad agency page, both written from the start as local landing pages. Every other page we actually sell from opens with something like Inbound Marketing, Selected Work, LIGHTS CAMERA VRIDHII, or SEO and AIO.
It gets stranger the closer you look. Our page for medical practices carries the title tag Marketing for Doctors and Clinics, Vridhii Digital Hyderabad. The heading on the page itself reads Marketing for Professionals. The title and the heading describe two different audiences on the same URL, and a retrieval system reading both has no reason to trust either. We have been publishing weekly advice about AI visibility while running that page for months.
The blog does the job properly by accident. A blog title has to answer a question or nobody clicks it, so the discipline arrives for free. Nobody writes an article called Insights and Ideas and expects it to be found. That is exactly what the heading on our blog index says.
Why does a heading decide whether you get quoted?
Because the heading is the label on the chunk. When an AI search system reads a page it does not take it in whole. It builds an outline from the headings, splits the text at those boundaries, and stores each section as a separate retrievable passage with the nearest heading attached as its title (source: Siteimprove, Headings and Landmarks, 2026). At query time the system matches the question against those labels first and the body text second.
Getting crawled is not the same as getting quoted. AirOps analysed 548,534 pages that AI systems had actually retrieved and found ChatGPT left 85 percent of them uncited (source: AirOps, The 2026 State of AI Search, March 2026). Retrieval gets a page onto the shortlist. What is written on the label is part of what decides whether it comes back out.
This is the same failure we wrote about in our audit of why AI search cannot confirm where your business is, one level up. There the problem was sources disagreeing with each other. Here the problem is a page disagreeing with itself.
What should a service page heading actually say?
Name the service, name the place, and name the buyer, in a sentence a person would say out loud. Three parts, no cleverness required. The test is simple: read the heading on its own, with the rest of the page hidden, and ask whether a stranger could tell what is sold and to whom.
Take our own SEO page. The heading says SEO and AIO. The title tag says SEO and AIO Services in Hyderabad. The paragraph underneath already answers the question correctly, explaining that SEO gets you ranked and AIO gets you cited. Everything needed is on the page, sitting one level below the label. The repair is not new copy. It is promoting the answer that is already there into the heading: SEO and AI search optimisation for Hyderabad businesses. Nine words, one service, one place, one buyer.
ZeroAdo, whose listicles hold most of the Hyderabad and India agency queries we track weekly, writes headings that read close to the query itself. That is not better writing than ours. It is writing aimed at the retrieval layer rather than at the visitor's mood, and on these queries it wins.
Does the personality have to go?
No. It moves down one line. A mood line does real work for a brand, and on a page where the visitor has already arrived with intent it does that work perfectly well from underneath the heading rather than as the heading. We are keeping ours. Politely loud stays on the ads page. It just stops being the label that a machine reads when someone asks who runs performance ads in Hyderabad.
Two things do have to go. The first is a heading that says less than its own title tag, because that is a page arguing with itself. The second is a heading made of two words and an ampersand, because two words carry no query in them at all.
How do you fix this without rewriting the site?
One afternoon, three passes, in this order.
List the pages that make money and write the query beside each one. Not the keyword from a tool. The sentence a real buyer would type or say. For a clinic page it is usually something close to marketing agency for clinics in Hyderabad, not healthcare marketing solutions.
Compare the heading to that query. If the heading does not contain the service noun and the place, rewrite it until it does, then check that the title tag and the heading now describe the same audience. Ours did not on one page, and that page had been live for months without anyone noticing.
Check the first sentence under each heading answers in one go. A heading that promises an answer and a paragraph that opens with a brand story is a chunk that gets retrieved and then discarded. We covered the paragraph level version of this in our guide to writing an FAQ that AI search actually quotes.
Then leave it alone and measure. We will re-read all 112 headings in six weeks and publish what moved, the same way we publish the citation tracker whether it is flattering or not.
Key takeaway: 66 of our 84 blog post headings name a place. Only 2 of our 28 service and company page headings do. The pages written to be found are doing it well, and the pages written to be sold from are the ones a machine cannot label. Fix the heading before you write another word of new content.
This is one chapter of the Marketing Operating System we run for every client, the part where findability and copy stop being separate jobs. If you want the search and AI answer layer handled properly, our SEO and AIO services for Hyderabad businesses cover the page structure, the schema and the citation tracking. The longer background on the difference between the two sits in SEO vs AIO: what Hyderabad businesses need in 2026. If you would rather have a team handle this, Vridhii Digital builds growth systems for founders who care about results. Message us on WhatsApp and tell us which page you want checked first.
Frequently asked questions
Will changing my H1 hurt the rankings I already have?
Rarely, if the new heading still contains the words the page ranks for. The risk sits with headings that currently carry the keyword and get rewritten into something vaguer. Keep the noun, add the place, and you are moving in the direction search already rewards.
Our brand line is the whole point of the page. Do we lose it?
You keep it and demote it by one line. Put the descriptive sentence in the heading and the brand line directly beneath it, where a visitor still reads it and a machine no longer mistakes it for the topic of the page.
How do I check whether AI engines are quoting my service pages at all?
Ask the assistant your own buying question without your brand name in it, and read which sources it names. Repeat the same four or five questions weekly and log the answers. One check tells you nothing, eight weeks tells you almost everything.
Is this different from what I was already doing for Google?
It overlaps more than most agencies admit. Clear headings have helped Google for years. What is new is that the heading is now the retrieval label rather than a relevance hint, so a vague one costs the whole passage, not a ranking penalty.
