If AI search will not name your business, the cause is usually not your website. It is that your own sources disagree with each other about who you are and where you are, and an engine resolving that contradiction takes the safe route and names somebody else. We tested this on ourselves. On 24 August 2026 we read our own three third party agency profiles alongside our own site, and they disagreed on four of the five attributes that matter. This post is the audit, the reason it costs citations, and the hour of work that fixes it.
What we found when we audited our own profiles
Three profiles, read end to end on 24 August 2026: Clutch, DesignRush and Agency Spotter. Our own site describes Vridhii Digital as a marketing studio in Sainikpuri, north Hyderabad, running SEO and AI search, performance, brand identity and production on a weekly operating cadence. Here is what the rest of the internet says instead.
| Attribute | Our own site | Clutch | DesignRush | Agency Spotter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Location | Sainikpuri, Hyderabad | Not stated | Remote Company, Hyderabad 500051 | Cherlapally, Hyderabad 500051 |
| Team size | Small senior team | 2 to 9 | Under 49 | Fewer than 10 |
| Rate band | Not published | One band | A different band | Not stated |
| Contact | WhatsApp only | Form only | Form only | A phone number that appears nowhere on our site |
| Description | Current, names Sainikpuri and AI search | 2018 boilerplate | Same 2018 boilerplate | Same 2018 boilerplate |
| Reviews | Not applicable | Zero | Zero | Zero |
Four of five core attributes contradict. Three different locations for one company, none of which is the one we actually sit in. Three different team size bands. Two different rate bands that we did not set and that do not match each other. A phone number on one profile that appears nowhere we control. Zero of the three profiles mentions Sainikpuri, and zero mentions AI search, which is the category we have published in every week since June. All three still carry the same description we wrote in 2018, including a social media focus that lists Pinterest advertising at thirty percent of our social work. We have never run a Pinterest campaign.
That is the honest state of our own entity layer while we sell entity work. We are publishing it because a falling metric with an explanation is worth more than a rising one without, and because every business reading this has the same problem and has not looked.
Why a disagreement between your own sources costs you a citation
An answer engine does not read one page and decide. It resolves an entity, which means it gathers every source that mentions a name and checks whether they agree. Agreement raises confidence. Contradiction lowers it. When confidence is low the engine does the sensible thing and names a business it can describe without hedging.
This matters more now than it did under classic SEO because ranking and citation have come apart. Ahrefs' 2026 analysis of AI Overview citations found that only 38 percent of cited pages also rank in the organic top ten for the same query, down from 76 percent in mid 2025. Two thirds of what gets quoted is not what ranks. So the old assumption, that being visible follows from ranking, no longer holds. What replaces it is whether the engine can confirm what you are before it recommends you.
Our own tracker shows the shape of this. From 12 June 2026 we have run the same local query, marketing agency Sainikpuri Secunderabad, every Monday. For eleven consecutive runs Vridhii did not appear, and part of the reason was not absence at all: a US based engine kept resolving Sainikpuri to Janakpuri in Delhi, because nothing in the corroboration layer bound the name to the right place firmly enough. On the twelfth run, on 24 August 2026, our site appeared for the first time, after eleven weeks of publishing that named Sainikpuri, ECIL and A S Rao Nagar in titles and body copy. The full citation report has the method and the raw runs.
How to run this audit on your own business in one hour
Open a blank sheet with six columns: source, business name, address, contact, description and services. Fill the first row from your own website, because that is the version you are trying to make everyone else agree with. Then add one row per source, in this order.
- Google Business Profile. The single most corroborated record you have, and the one most likely to carry hours or a category you set years ago.
- Every directory that already ranks for your category query. Search the query a customer would type, and list every aggregator on page one. Those are the pages engines read. In our own north Hyderabad reads, directory and aggregator pages held twenty four of thirty five first page results.
- LinkedIn, Instagram and any platform profile. Description and location fields, not just the handle.
- Anywhere you were listed without asking. Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaOnline and their equivalents create records from scraped data. You did not write them and they still speak for you.
Then mark every cell that disagrees with row one. The count is your entity debt. Ours was four out of five, and we do this for a living.
The fix sequence, in priority order
Do not fix everything at once, because most of it does not matter. Fix in the order an engine is likely to read.
One, make row one correct and specific. Your own site is the source everything else gets checked against, so it has to state the locality, not just the city, and it has to say what you actually do now. LocalBusiness schema with a precise address and areaServed does the machine readable half of this.
Two, correct the profiles that already rank. A profile nobody cites is not worth an afternoon. A directory page sitting on page one for your category query is worth doing properly, including the description, because the boilerplate you wrote years ago is what gets quoted about you.
Three, publish the place name until it binds. Corroboration is volume plus consistency. A single mention of your locality on a contact page is not enough to override a directory that says something else. Pages that name the locality, and mean it, are what moved our own query after eleven weeks. Our guide to local SEO for Sainikpuri and east Hyderabad covers the page structure.
Four, get reviews on the profiles that carry them. Zero reviews is not neutral, it is a missing corroboration signal on a page an engine already trusts. Two requests a week to delivered clients clears this faster than any technical work.
Five, re-check quarterly. Directories regenerate records. A profile you corrected in March can be overwritten by a scrape in June without telling you.
Key takeaway: AI search names the business it can describe without hedging. If your own sources contradict each other on location, size, contact or category, you are asking an engine to guess, and it will guess in favour of whoever is easier to confirm. Audit your sources against your own site, fix the ones that already rank, and publish your locality until it binds.
Entity work is one chapter of the framework we run for every client. The Marketing Operating System is how this stays a weekly habit rather than a one off cleanup, and the practical side of it sits on our SEO and AI search services page. If you would rather have a team handle this, Vridhii Digital builds growth systems for founders who care about results. Message us on WhatsApp and tell us what your business is called, and we will tell you what the internet currently thinks it is.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check what AI search thinks my business is?
Ask an engine to describe your business by name, then ask it where you are based and what you sell. If the answer is vague, dated or wrong, the problem is usually your third party profiles rather than your website.
Which profile should I fix first?
The one an engine is most likely to read. Start with the directories that already rank for your category query, then your Google Business Profile, then LinkedIn. Fixing a profile nobody cites changes nothing.
Does it matter if my old profiles list a different address?
Yes. An engine resolving your business across sources treats contradictions as uncertainty, and uncertainty is the easiest reason to name a competitor instead. Three addresses for one company reads as three weak signals, not one strong one.
How often should we re-run this audit?
Once a quarter is enough for most businesses, and once a month if you have recently moved, renamed, changed your service list or been listed by a directory you did not create yourself.
